How to build a successful relationship with grantmakers

The relationship between grantmaker and grant seeker seems at first blush to contain a major power imbalance: one side has money, the other needs it. However, according to recent reports, grantmakers are coming to realize that the interests of both sides are met when  the playing field is more level. 

This session will cover the following topics:

  • The importance of honesty: how much to tell a grantmaker in the beginning and as the relationship evolves
  • Face to face meetings: when should your pursue them and what should they be about?
  • Going off the beaten path: convincing the program officer to look at a more unconventional program
  • The program officer as advocate: how to convert a program officer into your most important supporter within and outside the foundation
  • When "no" means "not yet": turning a rebuff or a declination into a relationship-building opportunity
This session is intended for grant seekers who understand the importance of relationship building with grantmakers, but have not yet figured out how to do it successfully.
Speakers for this session:

Angela Glover
Director of Philanthropy
Southern Education Foundation

Angela Glover has over 10 years of fundraising experience. A lawyer by education, Ms. Glover has leveraged her practical experience and education in all aspects of fundraising from annual giving to planned giving. She has worked with various non-profits including colleges and universities, hospitals, social and legal services organizations. She has successfully built many of the development programs from the ground up. Currently, she serves as the Director of Philanthropy for the Southern Education Foundation (SEF). SEF is the oldest professionally staffed foundation in the country and the only charity dedicated to addressing fairness and equality in education for students in the southeast.

Kim Hutchens
Executive Director
The Ludacris Foundation

As Executive Director of The Ludacris Foundation (founded in 2001), Kim`s responsibilities include reviewing and funding over 30 proposals per year. She is responsible for initiating partnerships with corporations and other nonprofit organizations, and serves as representative for The Ludacris Foundation at local and national events. In addition to her duties with Ludacris, Kim is an entrepreneur, mentor and a member of NABFEME-National Association of Black Females Executives in Music and Entertainment.

Zenobia Waller
Grants Coordinator
Atlanta Union Mission

At Atlanta Union Mission, Zenobia is responsible for increasing financial support of the programs and services of the Mission by researching, completing and monitoring grant applications required by foundations, governmental funding sources, and selected corporations and churches. For the last 7 years, Zenobia has worked for non-profits, where she has increased funding using her exceptional ability to share a vision and procure support from individuals and groups. Among her accomplishment, she organized and co-facilitated the fund raising efforts for a trip to South Africa for 39 at-risk students and 12 chaperones for a 10 day journey. A native of Georgia, Zenobia attended Beulah Heights University, in Atlanta Georgia, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts and received the honors as Summa Cum Laude. She is a member of The Association of Fundraising Professionals.
