Fundraising in the one-person development shop: making the most of a shoestring budget

At the best of times, fundraising can be challenging. However, fundraising in the one person development shop can be daunting, especially when one is working with a shoestring budget. The key in situations like these is to know what areas to prioritize, and how to get the biggest bang for your buck because you can`t do it all.  This seminar will focus on the issues unique to one person fundraising departments, and will drill down in the following areas:
  • Keeping your organization on track financially: create and maintain a year-round fundraising plan
  • Research: research your prospects on a shoestring budget
  • Direct mail: work with an established third party service provider to maximize your returns
  • Major gifts program: develop and maintain a manageable high dollar giving club
  • Planned giving: start simple with a wills and bequests program
  • Donor solicitation: make it easy for your donors to give and for you to receive donations
  • Special events: conduct a unique annual event that makes efficient use of volunteers
  • Leadership involvement: find creative ways to get your executive director and/or board involved in the fundraising process
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to take their one person development shop to the next level.

Brad Carlson CFRE has over 20 years of experience in development. Part of his extensive experience includes working as a "one person shop" at two different agencies as development director. He has also served as a grants manager, major gifts officer, and planned gifts officer. Brad`s experience also includes strategic planning. Before establishing his consulting firm, he worked at Benedictine University as Chief Development Officer at Benedictine University. Agencies he has worked at include the Center on Halsted, Hephzibah Children`s Association in Oak Park, Easter Seals DuPage, and the American Red Cross, Greater Chicago Chapter. Jim Hahn, CFRE
Director of Development & Marketing
WAUKESHA COUNTY MUSEUM

Jim has over 15 years of experience as a nonprofit fundraiser, especially in small shop environments. Recently, Jim built a development department from the ground up for a homeless shelter, growing its annual appeal into six-figure success, more than quadrupling the income from a golf outing, planning a walk-a-thon in 100 days start-to-finish that netted over $10,000, and building up a database using all volunteers to over 13,000 useable addresses -- all in just two years. His success allowed him to finally hire an assistant. From identifying software to systemizing gift receipting and processing to coordinating hundreds of volunteers and groups, Jim knows how to work with limited resources and achieve great results. He has served on numerous local and national boards of directors as well, so he knows how to maximize these key teammates to an organization`s best advantage.

Jessica Paulsen
Director of Marketing and Development
Eastern Illinois Foodbank

In addition to her current position as Director of Marketing and Development at the Eastern Illinois Foodbank, Jessica works as a consultant helping small- and medium-sized non-profit organizations to make the most of limited resources by developing and implementing fundraising, marketing and communications strategies. At the Foodbank, Jessica leads the agency`s fundraising efforts as a one-person shop. Since she began in 2008, Jessica`s development planning has helped the Foodbank double its average gift and increase fundraising revenue by 40%. Under her leadership, donations to the Foodbank`s largest annual food and fund drive were the highest to date, nearly doubling the amount donated the year prior. Jessica earned a BA from Gannon University and will complete an MBA at the University of Illinois in June 2009. She will launch Do Good Consulting’s newest office, serving the Chicago Metro region, in July 2009.
