As the grant seeking process becomes more and more competitive, it is  essential to understand what grantmakers are actually looking for when they decide whether or not to award a grant. This session offers an unusual opportunity to hear directly from a variety of community, private and family foundation funders. Grantmakers from a variety of private, community and family foundations will participate in a panel discussion. Issues we will explore with the panelists include:
  • Foundation culture: what kinds of projects do grantmakers like to fund?
  • Winning proposals: what makes them stand out?
  • Foundation guidelines: are they set in stone?
  • Building the relationship: what gives foundations confidence in the organizations they fund?
Whether you have been securing grants for decades or are just starting out, the panel discussion will provide you with a valuable view of the grantmaking world from the point of view of the grantmaker.

Speakers for this session:

Tracey Jarmon
Program Associate, Philanthropic Advisory Services, Community Investment
The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region

As an Associate at The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, Tracey works with the Foundation’s donors to develop strategic grantmaking initiatives. She coordinates all aspects of special programs that provide donors and potential donors with information on critical issues affecting the region. Prior to joining The Community Foundation in 2007, Tracey worked in donor-advised fund administration for over 2 years at Calvert Foundation. Tracey holds a B.A. in Linguistics from Georgetown University.

Michael Rhein
Director of Programs and Resource Development
National AIDS Fund

Michael Rhein has worked in public health and philanthropy for over 15 years. Currently, Michael serves as the Director of Programs and Resource Development with the National AIDS Fund (NAF), managing NAF`s major foundation relationships and overseeing all programmatic initiatives. Under Michael’s leadership, NAF’s grantmaking has nearly tripled to over $5.6M per year. Throughout his career, Michael has worked alongside high-profile private foundations such as the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, as well as corporations and government agencies. His experience also includes years of work with local-level funders, including Community Foundations, United Ways, private foundations and local government. NAF is itself a large collaborative system including hundreds of national and local funders that collectively direct over $10M a year to address HIV/AIDS. Michael holds a MPA from the University of Southern California and a BA from George Washington University.

Lynn Tadlock
Director of Grants
Claude Moore Charitable Foundation

Lynn Tadlock is Director of Grants for the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation (CMCF), a private foundation with assets valued at $300 million. Lynn does extensive public speaking and was the featured speaker for the State Department ‘s Lecture Tour in Bulgaria, sponsored by the American Embassy, Bulgaria. Prior to her philanthropic work, Ms. Tadlock had an extensive career as The Director of Planning and Development for Fairfax County Park Authority. In this leadership role, Ms. Tadlock, executed the development of capital construction projects valued in excess of $200 million, and negotiated the acquisition of more than 10,000 acres to be preserved as public park. She received the Outstanding Plan of the Year Award by the American Planning Association.

Luis Vivaldi
Panel Moderator
The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region

Luis Vivaldi is a Program Associate at The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region. As a member of the Community Investment team, his main area of responsibility is to support and facilitate the work of two of the Foundation`s signature education and capacity building initiatives -- Collaborative for Education Organizing and the Partnership for Equity. Originally from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico and Carthage,Texas, Luis utilizes his nonprofit expertise to advance the Foundation`s grantmaking, capacity building, and awareness building strategies. Luis earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and International Studies from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and a Masters of International Development from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) of the University of Pittsburgh. Outside of The Community Foundation, Luis is an avid film watcher and Co-Chair of the DC chapter of Hispanics in Philanthropy.
