Proposal writing

Winning a grant isn't easy and often the process of writing a proposal seems intimidating. Most of the difficulty comes from not knowing what exactly goes into an effective proposal. This session will cover the following topics:
  •  The essential components of a grant proposal package
  •  Important writing techniques that make your proposal stand out from the pile
  •  Layout and design of a strong proposal
  •  Customizing a proposal to match a grant maker's interest and using your proposal as a relationship building tool
You'll go back to the office with a well honed plan for ensuring that your proposals cover the right bases every time.

Joseph Barbato
President
Barbato Associates

Joseph Barbato has more than 30 years of experience in development communications, including stints as a senior writer and editorial director in major capital campaigns at NYU and The Nature Conservancy. His consulting firm produces proposals, case statements, brochures, and other persuasive pieces for the major gifts programs of such clients as the Brookings Institution, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the National Wildlife Federation, The George Washington University, the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. He has led seminars on writing for the Kresge Foundation and Duke University. A columnist for Contributions magazine, Joe is the author of several books, including Writing for a Good Cause and How to Write Knockout Proposals. He earned an M.A. at NYU and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Authors Guild.

Jayme Sokolow

Jayme A. Sokolow is the founder and president of The Development Source, Inc., a Silver Spring, Maryland-based company that works with nonprofit organizations and businesses around the country on development. Over the past five years, he has been involved in over $50 billion worth of development efforts. Sokolow has developed hundreds of proposals to government agencies, foundations, corporate giving sources, and donors. He also has been the president of two nonprofit organizations and currently serves as a board member of one nonprofit organization and one foundation. He has a Ph.D. in history from New York University.
