Fundraising in the one-person development shop: making the most of a shoestring budget

At the best of times, fundraising can be challenging. However, fundraising in the one person development shop can be daunting, especially when one is working with a shoestring budget. The key in situations like these is to know what areas to prioritize, and how to get the biggest bang for your buck because you can't do it all.  This seminar will focus on the issues unique to one person fundraising departments, and will drill down in the following areas:
  • Keeping your organization on track financially: create and maintain a year-round fundraising plan
  • Research: research your prospects on a shoestring budget
  • Direct mail: work with an established third party service provider to maximize your returns
  • Major gifts program: develop and maintain a manageable high dollar giving club
  • Planned giving: start simple with a wills and bequests program
  • Donor solicitation: make it easy for your donors to give and for you to receive donations
  • Special events: conduct a unique annual event that makes efficient use of volunteers
  • Leadership involvement: find creative ways to get your executive director and/or board involved in the fundraising process
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to take their one person development shop to the next level.

Molly Corbett
Principal
Corbett Nonprofit Consulting

Molly Corbett has worked in the nonprofit sector for over 15 years. Prior to working as a development consultant she was the Director of Programs and Grants at the Ventura County Community Foundation. She currently works with three nonprofit organizations all of which are small shop development offices. She also has experience as a community organizer in Chicago, Denver and central California. Molly received her BA in Political Science from Loyola University New Orleans and her MA in Political Science from the University of Colorado, Denver.

Karen Griffin
Director of Resource Development
St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center, Inc.

Karen`s early career included management positions with a focus on human resource issues and administration, including 13 years as the owner of a small business. For the past nine years, she has done fundraising for social service nonprofit organizations, and in the last three years, she has functioned as the sole fundraiser for a Baltimore-based housing group. In her current position, she has met her annual goal of $1,000,000 through a combination of corporate and foundation grants, donations and special events each year for the last three years. Karen is pursuing her MPA degree at the University of Baltimore and is a member of AFP and ASPA.

Jennifer Pelton
Director of Development
Public Justice Center, Inc.

Jennifer has spent the past 17 years fundraising as paid staff and as consultant with a focus on social justice and arts organizations. She has built several development programs from the ground up, and counts serves as a mentor to new development professionals and volunteers. She co-created the AFP-Maryland Small Shop Roundtable, a successful peer-to-peer network that combines online and in-person discussions. By day, Jennifer enjoys her job at the Public Justice Center where she shares responsibility with the Executive Director and Board for raising $1.4 million annually. In 2006, Ms. Pelton earned her CFRE. She writes and teaches frequently about small shop fundraising and avoiding burnout in a high-turnover profession.
