Engaging your board in fundraising

Your board can be among your most powerful fundraising assets. That is, if you use it correctly. Too often, the board is not involved in fundraising or views fundraising as a daunting task. The result is that many board members neglect their responsibilities, which are then left to staff members who have too many other responsibilities already. To address this problem, your board members need to be reminded of the importance of their fundraising responsibilities, and learn concrete tools and techniques that make fundraising a rewarding task.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Why board members fear fundraising, and what you can do about it 
  • What board members need to know to start fundraising
  • Steps for energizing your board even when you are not on the board
  • How to deal with board members who won't fundraise even when they know they should
  • Building and maintaining the fundraising partnership between the board and  development staff
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to energize theirs board members about fundraising. The session is designed for beginning to intermediate fundraisers.

Lou Cartier
Principal
Cartier Outreach Associates

Lou Cartier has helped higher education and non profit organizations develop resources for 35 years. Lou founded Cartier Outreach Associates in 1998 after success in organizational communication and "advancement" at the University of Michigan and University of Nebraska at Omaha. He has presented national workshops on business planning, board development, strategic communication and major gift fundraising. Former state president of the Public Relations Society of America (NE), Lou coaches "learning organizations" to engage prospective donors and other stakeholders more effectively, with confidence and accountability. He also teaches business principles and practice at Aims Community College in Greeley, Colorado. Lou holds degrees from Wayne State University and the University of Michigan. A member of the Association of Fundraising professionals, he is active in community and economic development in northern Colorado.

M. L. Hanson
Principal
M. L. Hanson & Associates

Prior to her current position, M. L. Hanson served as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer for three nonprofit organizations, after a fifteen year career as a commercial banker. She assists Board of Directors and Executives to improve their fundraising effectiveness using organizational development strategies for special events, individual giving, earned income and celebrity lectures. She has run for public office, published numerous articles, received many awards and is a featured speaker at local and national conventions and meetings. She founded Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame and has served numerous Boards and consulted with scores of nonprofit organizations. She is a member of National Center for Community Collaboration, Colorado Women`s Chamber of Commerce, Business and Professional Women and Colorado Nonprofit Association. She attended the University of Washington and University of Colorado.

Mark Holdt
Principal
Mountain Sage Consulting

Mark Holdt currently serves in the unique dual capacity of Vice President for Planning and Project Development for the YMCA of the Rockies and Principal Owner of Mountain Sage Consulting. In both venues, Mark specializes in the design of planning models that lead to visionary opportunities and exciting, preferred futures. Mark also has an impressive background in the area of financial development. He previously served as the President and CEO of the Bethphage Foundation and as Vice President for Development at the YMCA of the Rockies. During his tenure in leadership, both organizations realized unprecedented record-level giving performance as a result of actively engaging the Board in the planning and development process. Mark holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska and a Graduate Degree in Financial Management from the University of Delaware. He serves on numerous boards and is a member of the Association of YMCA Professionals.
