Planned giving

Over the next decade, trillions of dollars will be donated to nonprofit organizations through planned gifts. These are most often unrestricted bequests of many thousands of dollars and they can make or break fundraising campaigns. You need to make sure you understand the motivations and challenges for donors and their advisors, know how to set realistic goals, and plan how you will attract and close these gifts.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Planned giving vehicles and how they work
  • Special stewardship plans for top-level donors
  • Customizing a planned giving program for your organization
  •  Keeping your donors involved and committed after the gift has been made

After the program, you'll have a better understanding of (i) planned giving principles and practices, and (ii) how to implement a successful planned giving program.  This session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

Speakers for this session:

Carol Fabbri
Managing Partner
Fair Advisors

Carol is the managing partner of an innovative financial advisory firm focusing on creating financial solutions for individuals, nonprofits, and corporations. She has been working with nonprofits as a consultant and board member for more than a decade and holds the designation Chartered Advisor to Philanthropies (CAP). Prior to financial advising, Carol was a management and information technology consultant in the US and Europe. Her experience managing large projects, teams and client relationships has formed the foundation for her work with Fair Advisors and nonprofits. Carol has an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Business.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Jim’s professional career has included 30 years of resource development experience and he has served in public television, the MS Society, the Arthritis Foundation, and the American Red Cross. In August 2006, Jim was promoted to Senior Director of Planned Giving, and with four field staff and a Director of Operations serves all Clubs in the movement. Gordon Smith
Senior Director, National Planned Giving Program
National Jewish Health

Gordon received his Bachelors of Arts in Economics and Psychology from Colgate University in 1983. He went on to complete a Masters in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance in 1989 from the University of Colorado. Before going into planned giving and the nonprofit world, Gordon worked as a financial consultant, where he acquired experience in estate planning, business succession planning, insurance, and investment management. This provided a wonderful springboard to planned giving and the work he does for National Jewish Medical and Research Center where he has worked since September of 1995. As the Senior Director, National Planned Giving Program for National Jewish Health, Gordon is responsible for planned and major gifts. This includes marketing charitable trusts, gift annuities, bequests and outright gifts to supporters of National Jewish throughout the country.
