How to build a successful relationship with grantmakers

The relationship between grantmaker and grant seeker seems at first blush to contain a major power imbalance: one side has money, the other needs it. However, according to recent reports, grantmakers are coming to realize that the interests of both sides are met when  the playing field is more level. 

This session will cover the following topics:

  • The importance of honesty: how much to tell a grantmaker in the beginning and as the relationship evolves
  • Face to face meetings: when should your pursue them and what should they be about?
  • Going off the beaten path: convincing the program officer to look at a more unconventional program
  • The program officer as advocate: how to convert a program officer into your most important supporter within and outside the foundation
  • When "no" means "not yet": turning a rebuff or a declination into a relationship-building opportunity
This session is intended for grant seekers who understand the importance of relationship building with grantmakers, but have not yet figured out how to do it successfully.

Sophie Faust
Program Officer
Caring for Colorado Foundation

A current program officer for Caring for Colorado, one of Denver’s most respected health grantmaking foundations, Sophie Faust advises potential grantees on creating top-notch grant proposals. Faust also has been active in fundraising training for non-profits through Rural Philanthropy Days, a “matchmaking” program for prospective grantees and foundations throughout Colorado. Faust also knows issues having worked on the grantees’ side as a community developer for the State of Colorado Department of Local Affairs, and having worked in third world countries on child health and labor issues. She holds a BA in Sociology with concentrations in Urban Studies and Leadership, Ethics and Values.

Mindy Klowden
Development Director
Jefferson Center for Mental Health

Mindy Klowden is the Development Director of Jefferson Center for Mental Health, and joined the staff in June, 2005. In this position she is responsible for overseeing all private foundation, corporate and government grant writing, grants management, endowment fundraising, and community and government relations activities. Last year Mindy raised $1.5 million in grants and organized Jefferson Center`s 50th anniversary Gala with 500+ guests. She also serves as the staff lead role on the Public Policy Committee and develops legislative action alerts and updates to disseminate to mental health supporters. Mindy has more than 17 years of experience in nonprofit management,resource development and public policy work, with a particular emphasis on advocating on behalf of and developing programs to support low-income community members. Mindy graduated from The Colorado College with a BA in Sociology in 1994 and earned a Masters in Nonprofit Management from Regis University in 2001.
