Winning proposals: a tour of four successful case studies

Even when you understand the principles of effective proposal writing, it can still be challenging to understand why a certain proposal stands out from the others. In this session, we will take you on a tour of four winning proposals, so that you can learn what makes a proposal truly fundable:
 
The session will provide an advanced analysis of tone, writing style and format, and includes a discussion of the following topics:
  • Building the case for support: how to make a favourable impression from the outset
  • Sustainability: giving funders the reassurance that you will still be around after they leave
  • Testimonials: using the power of stories to create a strong impression
  • Project outcomes: describing outcomes in a way the funder can immediately understand
  • Project budgets: avoiding the pitfalls
  • Sources of other support: what is the funder looking for here, and what if you don’t have them? 
This session is intended as a follow-on to the first session on proposal writing.

Dave Forrest
Strategic Development Manager
Equity Partnership

Dave Forrest is the Strategic Development Manager of the Equity Partnership which works for the Lesbian Gay and Bisexual (LGB) communities and is the LGB Strategic Partnership in Bradford and the lead on the Regional LGB Network. Its work has been identified as a national model of good practice by both the Equalities and Human Rights Commission and most recently by the Department of Communities and Local Government. It has been successful with large grants from Capacity Builders, Big Lottery Fund and is the only LGB organisation in the region to be funded through the Local Area Agreement of the Local Strategic Partnership. Dave Forrest is a graduate and, in a previous role, managed a work placement for homeless people with a high street retailer; this work won a national award and was a case study in European conferences.

For four years Victoria has been the Principal Consultant at Ireland Associates, providing high quality fundraising expertise and support to public sector, voluntary and community organisations to enable them to realise their vision. Prior to this Victoria was External Funding Manager at British Waterways and Fundraising Officer at HelpAge International. Victoria has a strong project management and fundraising background gained during 12 years in the not-for-profit sector. She specialises in fundraising training, funding strategy, trust and institutional fundraising, capital appeals, and grant management. As an Advisor for the Big Lottery Fund and an Assessor for BBC Children in Need Victoria has first hand knowledge of what grantmakers look for. She has prepared successful applications to a range of funders including Lottery Distributors, Government Agencies, European funds, and Trusts for projects in most sectors: Community Development, Churches, Environment, Heritage, the Arts, Young People, and International Development.
