Proposal writing

Winning a grant isn't easy and often the process of writing a proposal seems intimidating. Most of the difficulty comes from not knowing what exactly goes into an effective proposal. This session will cover the following topics:
  •  The essential components of a grant proposal package
  •  Important writing techniques that make your proposal stand out from the pile
  •  Layout and design of a strong proposal
  •  Customizing a proposal to match a grant maker's interest and using your proposal as a relationship building tool
You'll go back to the office with a well honed plan for ensuring that your proposals cover the right bases every time.

Allison DiPerte

In her current position, Allison specializes in securing programmatic grants and oversees the organization’s grant portfolio. She collaborates with staff to identify program needs and develops them into fundable projects. Allison also has experience writing government grant proposals. Allison began her nonprofit career as the Manager of Communication in the Office of the Executive Director for Cancer Research Institute. While serving in this capacity, she managed sustaining grants as well as produced communications that reflected the organization’s mission and served to expand foundation and corporate awareness of programs. Allison holds a B.A. in Biological Sciences from Barnard College at Columbia University and an M.S. in Nonprofit Management from Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy.

Jesse Hergert

For over a decade, Jesse has been responsible for raising millions of dollars for local and national organizations from foundation, corporate, and government sources. She has planned and implemented successful institutional fundraising strategies, from coordinating research, to developing proposals, to reporting on successful programs. While working at organizations including Boys & Girls Harbor, Community Healthcare Network, United Way of New York City, and the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, Jesse has worked closely with organizational leadership, board members, program directors, fiscal officers, and others throughout the organizations in order to meet (or exceed) fundraising goals. She holds an MS in Nonprofit Management from Milano the New School for Management and Urban Policy.

Cathy Jenkins
Director, Corporate and Foundation Giving
American Foundation for the Blind

Cathy`s proposal writing experience encompasses institutions of higher learning, children’s arts and education museums, international medical aid organizations, and human services agencies. In her current position, Cathy oversees and implements AFB’s major grants program by: conducting funder research; writing proposals for new, lapsed, and current donors; determining, and developing a plan to achieve, budgetary goals; planning and implementing corporate and foundation events; and cultivating relationships with foundation officers and corporate representatives. Cathy has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina.
