Engaging your board in fundraising

Your board can be among your most powerful fundraising assets. That is, if you use it correctly. Too often, the board is not involved in fundraising or views fundraising as a daunting task. The result is that many board members neglect their responsibilities, which are then left to staff members who have too many other responsibilities already. To address this problem, your board members need to be reminded of the importance of their fundraising responsibilities, and learn concrete tools and techniques that make fundraising a rewarding task.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Why board members fear fundraising, and what you can do about it 
  • What board members need to know to start fundraising
  • Steps for energizing your board even when you are not on the board
  • How to deal with board members who won't fundraise even when they know they should
  • Building and maintaining the fundraising partnership between the board and  development staff
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to energize theirs board members about fundraising. The session is designed for beginning to intermediate fundraisers.
Speakers for this session:

Ray Minor
Vice President for Advancement
United Methodist Homes

Ray Minor is chairman of the board of the David Mathews Center for Civic Life. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Issues Forums Institute. Minor was appointed vice president of advancement for United Methodist Homes of New Jersey, effective October 2, 2006. Major responsibilities include public relations and fundraising. Ray has served as vice president for institutional advancement at Wiley College in Texas, executive director of national and community service (Cabinet Member) in the Alabama Governor’s Administration, Alabama area development director of The College Fund/UNCF, and as development director (Cabinet member) at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama. Minor earned the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of Alabama. He is pursuing a PhD in Public Policy and Public Administration at Walden University (ABD).

Ruthellen has nineteen years of experience in all aspects of fundraising as a member of several nonprofit and institutional boards and professionally as a fundraiser and marketing specialist. In her current position, she works with a wide variety of nonprofits and philanthropic entities to help grow their development initiatives with consistency and sustainability. She is a frequent workshop facilitator for The Support Center for Nonprofit Management in New York City. Ruthellen is on the faculty at New York University`s George H. Heyman, Jr. Center for Fundraising and Philanthropy. She currently teaches The Annual Appeal and Technology for Fundraising in the Certificate Program and Your Strategic Technology Plan and Informed Fundraising in the Masters Degree program.

Todd Anthony Sloan is Senior Counsel for Strategic Initiatives for Innovative Resources Group. During Todd’s 20-year career in marketing, development and sales, he has had senior management and consulting roles with higher education institutions and other nonprofit organizations in the Northeast. His diverse management and fundraising experiences include overseeing and coordinating all aspects of development operations, alumni programs, communications and integrated marketing. Working closely with nonprofit CEOs and board chairs, he has extensive expertise and success in developing board leadership and enhancing fundraising capacity through the implementation of innovative best practices resulting in top performing Boards of Directors. Todd holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from The Pennsylvania State University.
