Winning a grant isn't easy and often the process of writing a proposal seems intimidating. Most of the difficulty comes from not knowing what exactly goes into an effective proposal. This session will cover the following topics:
  •  The essential components of a grant proposal package
  •  Important writing techniques that make your proposal stand out from the pile
  •  Layout and design of a strong proposal
  •  Customizing a proposal to match a grant maker's interest and using your proposal as a relationship building tool
You'll go back to the office with a well honed plan for ensuring that your proposals cover the right bases every time.

Chris Chang Weeks

Triton Museum of Art

Chris joined the Development team at the Triton Museum of Art six years ago. Her approach to proposal writing has brought her a high rate of success, and she manages a grant portfolio of over $400,000 that has increased in diversity by over 35% since she joined the museum. As a member of a nine-person grants board for the Los Altos Community Foundation for two years, Chris also has first hand experience in evaluating proposals and selecting recipients. Chris is a member of American Association of Museums, and holds a Masters degree from Texas A & M University.

Danny Jenkins
Director
We Write the Grants

Danny Jenkins has delivered successful grant writing and program development services for non-profits since 1989, specializing in health, mental health, addiction recovery, housing and family services. He has designed and initiated health-related prevention and treatment programs for people living with HIV, Hepatitis C and youth populations which stand as models for as effective, cost efficient and compassionate service. In his current role as Manager with Cri-Help, Inc. and Common Ground – The Westside HIV Community Center, he is responsible for securing approximately one-third of each annual budget from government and foundation resources. As Director of We Write the Grants, he helps non-profits across the country to develop fundable and sustainable social services programs. Danny is proud to have co-founded Los Angeles County’s HIV-Drug and Alcohol Task Force, to have served on the L.A. City AIDS Coordinator’s Advisory Board, and he now co-chairs the Hepatitis C Task Force.

Cherilyn Parsons
Consultant: Development and Strategic Initiatives

Cherilyn Parsons has been a fundraising and grantwriting consultant for 17 years. She has been directly instrumental in securing tens of millions of dollars in grants from foundations and individuals for projects in many fields. For the past several years, she has specialized in media and journalism nonprofits. Cherilyn spent many years at USC, where as a consultant she wrote successful proposals and raised funds for myriad projects throughout the university, particularly the Annenberg School for Communication and the School of Medicine. She also served as USC’s staff Director of Foundation Relations. In other work at USC, she taught business communications for four years in the Marshall School of Business. She has published many feature articles in newspapers and magazines and holds a Master’s in Professional Writing from USC and a Bachelor’s in English from UCLA.
