Engaging your board in fundraising

Your board can be among your most powerful fundraising assets. That is, if you use it correctly. Too often, the board is not involved in fundraising or views fundraising as a daunting task. The result is that many board members neglect their responsibilities, which are then left to staff members who have too many other responsibilities already. To address this problem, your board members need to be reminded of the importance of their fundraising responsibilities, and learn concrete tools and techniques that make fundraising a rewarding task.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Why board members fear fundraising, and what you can do about it
  • What board members need to know to start fundraising
  • Steps for energizing your board even when you are not on the board
  • How to deal with board members who won't fundraise even when they know they should
  • Building and maintaining the fundraising partnership between the board and  development staff
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to energize theirs board members about fundraising. The session is designed for beginning to intermediate fundraisers.
Speakers for this session:

Kelly Dulka
Executive Director
Tri-Valley YMCA

With over 20 years of fundraising experience for non-profit organizations, Kelly has worked extensively to help board members understand and embrace their role as fundraisers. She offers workshops on board engagement and has turned skeptics into believers by giving boards the tools and resources they need to secure individual and corporate gifts as well as secure major grant funds. Currently she serves as Executive Director of the Tri-Valley YMCA where every board member commits to “give and get” to in order to further the YMCA mission. Kelly received her Bachelor`s and Master`s degrees in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministries from Holy Names University. She currently serves on the Alameda County Mental Health Board and the Pleasanton Community of Character Collaborative. She is a member of the Association of YMCA Professionals.

William Freyd
Consultant

In 1974, Bill started a fund raising firm, IDC, which has become one of the largest in history. He has worked with boards all over the country and successfully motivated them to make very large gifts annually. Bill has, himself, served on many non-profit boards including the Las Vegas Philharmonic where he was elected Board President and CEO. Recognizing the need to raise more than $1 milion a year from board gifts, he led his board through a major self assesment which resulted in significant fundraising success. He has also worked with grant making institutions, one of which distributed $6 million annually. Designated one of only six Sages ever recognized by the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel, Bill is a CFRE. He has also taught fund-raising at the University level. Bill graduated from Georgetown University and is listed in the noted Marquis Who`s Who publications.

Michael Kasperzak
Session Moderator
Cygnet Management Group

A former Mayor of Mountain View California, Mr. Kasperzak has been an active volunteer and Board member for over 30 years. He has served on a number of non-profit boards, including the American Red Cross, Avenidas, the Community School of Music and Arts, El Camino Hospital Foundation and Lewis & Clark College. Additionally, he has served as the Financial Development Chairman of several such organizations and has worked to transform how local non-profits engage board members in fund raising activity. Mike brings a wealth of information to the discussion of engaging board members as an "average" board member who is passionate about fund raising. He has attended an Indiana University Fund Raising School program for the American Red Cross and is a graduate of Lewis & Clark College and Hasting College of the Law.

Catherine Markwell
CEO
The BizWorld Foundation

Catherine has worked in her current position since 1997. She transformed BizWorld from a small start-up to an international organization, and now oversees the entire operation including development, outreach, and management. She reports directly to the board of directors, and works directly with the board in fundraising and stragic planning. Additionally, she served and worked with several boards including Financial Women`s Association, The Future Leaders Institue and Junior League of San Francisco. She holds a Director’s Certification from the Anderson School of Business which outlines the expectations of board membership for corporate board participation.
