Planned giving

Over the next decade, trillions of dollars will be donated to nonprofit organizations through planned gifts. These are most often unrestricted bequests of many thousands of dollars and they can make or break fundraising campaigns. You need to make sure you understand the motivations and challenges for donors and their advisors, know how to set realistic goals, and plan how you will attract and close these gifts.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Planned giving vehicles and how they work
  • Special stewardship plans for top-level donors
  • Customizing a planned giving program for your organization
  •  Keeping your donors involved and committed after the gift has been made

After the program, you'll have a better understanding of (i) planned giving principles and practices, and (ii) how to implement a successful planned giving program.  This session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

Speakers for this session:

Tom Bashwiner
Director of Gift Planning
Fort Vancouver National Trust

Tom has been a fundraising professional for more than 30 years and currently serves as Director of Gift Planning at Fort Vancouver National Trust, the nonprofit partner in the 366 acre national park site in Southwest Washington State. Tom specializes in planned giving/major gifts with a particular focus on gifts of real estate, residential and commercial. He has authored a licensed clock-hour class entitled "Using Charitable Strategies to Sell Real Estate" which he teaches to local Realtors. He belongs to the Southwest Washington Estate Planning Council and the Northwest Planned Giving Roundtable in Portland. He is a Fellow in the Asociation of Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) and received his BA degree from Creighton University in Omaha.

Benjamin ("Ben") Porter

Ben Porter has more than 35 years in private law practrice in Seattle helping clients with their estate planning goals, including implementation of clients` philanthropic goals. Ben graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with B.B.A. and JD (with honors) degrees. He also received a LL.M. (Tax) From Georgetown University National Law Center. Ben is a member of the Washington State Bar Real Property Probate and Trust and Tax Sections. He served as the chair of the Tax Section Estate and Gift Tax Committee in 2005-2007 and is the president-elect of the Tax Section. Ben`s practice includes helping clients create endowment and direct gifts under wills effective on death, or or by lifetime gifts outright, or through charitable remainder trusts. Ben is on the board of directors of the University of Wisconsin Foundation and the King County Bar Foundation and a member of the Seattle Foundation.
