How to build a successful relationship with grantmakers

The relationship between grantmaker and grant seeker seems at first blush to contain a major power imbalance: one side has money, the other needs it. However, according to recent reports, grantmakers are coming to realize that the interests of both sides are met when  the playing field is more level. 

This session will cover the following topics:

  • The importance of honesty: how much to tell a grantmaker in the beginning and as the relationship evolves
  • Face to face meetings: when should your pursue them and what should they be about?
  • Going off the beaten path: convincing the program officer to look at a more unconventional program
  • The program officer as advocate: how to convert a program officer into your most important supporter within and outside the foundation
  • When "no" means "not yet": turning a rebuff or a declination into a relationship-building opportunity
This session is intended for grant seekers who understand the importance of relationship building with grantmakers, but have not yet figured out how to do it successfully.

Martine Meredith Collier, CFRE, GPC
Director of Development & Membership
Grantmakers in the Arts

Martine Meredith has been involved in development for 25 years. In her current position, she is responsible for generating $1.2 million annually through foundation funding to support the activities of Grantmakers in the Arts, where her duties include identifying funding sources, managing over 100 grants annually, and developing a communications plan to enhance relationships with funders. Previously, as Executive Director of The Sarasota County Arts Council, she was responsible for strategic planning and day-to-day operations of an organization administering $1.2 million in county cultural arts funding each year, and developed and directed all grantmaking programs. Before that, she worked as Community Arts Development Manager at The Georgia Council for the Arts where she was responsible for managing $1.7 million of community arts grants funded through the State of Georgia and the National Endowment for the Arts. She currently serves on the Membership Committee of the American Association of Grant Professionals. She earned an M.A. in Arts Administration from Goucher College and a B.F.A in Theatre from University of Memphis. A member of the Association of Fund-Raising Professionals and the American Association of Grant Professionals, she is credentialed as a CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) and GPC (Grants Professional Certified).

G.Robin has been in fundraising for 30 years. In his current position, as Washington State Ambassador for The Showcase of Fundraising Innovation and Inspiration, he is responsible for showing how to create successful relationships with grantmakers. He is also the COO of Five Rivers Fundraising where is responsible for developing person-to-person connections and advancing the progressive fundraising position with grantmakers. He is also currently Deputy for Inspirational Giving at NW Chapter of the SCA, Inc. where he was responsible for Development strategy and long-range planning to revamp the group's model to include partnering with businesses and other educational institutions. G.Robin currently serves as a volunteer for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The Northwest Science Fiction Society, SteamCon, The Interactive History Company, Boy Scouts of America, and Partners in Public Education. He earned a Bachelors in Theatre from Eastern Washington University. He is a supporter of Colonus Interactive - Educational and Relationship Fundraising Organization, Partners in Public Education, Habitat for Humanity, The Seattle Children's Theatre and KIVA micro-lending.
