Engaging your board in fundraising

Your board can be among your most powerful fundraising assets. That is, if you use it correctly. Too often, the board is not involved in fundraising or views fundraising as a daunting task. The result is that many board members neglect their responsibilities, which are then left to staff members who have too many other responsibilities already. To address this problem, your board members need to be reminded of the importance of their fundraising responsibilities, and learn concrete tools and techniques that make fundraising a rewarding task.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Why board members fear fundraising, and what you can do about it 
  • What board members need to know to start fundraising
  • Steps for energizing your board even when you are not on the board
  • How to deal with board members who won't fundraise even when they know they should
  • Building and maintaining the fundraising partnership between the board and  development staff
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to energize theirs board members about fundraising. The session is designed for beginning to intermediate fundraisers.
Speakers for this session:

Beth Bauer
Director of Individual Giving
National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Gateway Area Chapter

Beth began her work in the non profit arena as an Executive Director in mental health. In this capacity, she worked with her board to develop a major gift committee. Beth then turned to political fundraising, including major gift solicitation, volunteer recruitment and campaign development. She moved to Chicago as the E.D. of a regional arts center where she worked closely with her board to develop its skills in making the ask. In her current position with NMSS, Beth has undertaken the task of training her board to develop a major and planned gifts program from the ground up. Beth Bauer received her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

Arthur Hailand
Executive Officer, Development
American Red Cross, St. Louis Area Chapter

After eight years of serving on the Board of Lake Forest College, Arthur Hailand began his career in development by traveling around the country advocating and raising money for a $65 million comprehensive campaign. He then joined the Red Cross in St. Louis as head of Development, managing a staff of 10 responsible for raising nearly $7 million in annual funds. As part of Arthur`s responsibilities, he manages the Board`s Development and Governance Committees. Responsibilities include recruitment, orientation, bylaws compliance, engagement and retreats. Accomplishments include establishing a board competencies grid, succession planning, reorganizing the Development Committee, and overhauling the quarterly meetings and board information packages to increase effectiveness. Arthur has a law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

Deborah Kersting
Missouri Executive Director
March of Dimes

Deborah Kersting has been executive director of the Missouri March of Dimes since 2002. During that time she has directed a program and fundraising team and grown revenue more than 46 percent. In the challenging year of 2008, March of Dimes increased revenue by more than 8 percent. In this position, Ms. Kersting supervises a staff of 20 and works with a board of 60 to organize more than 20 March for Babies, Bikers for Babies, Signature Chefs and other fundraising events across Missouri. Previously, she was a member and chair of the St. Louis County Council, and active in several public issue campaigns. Ms. Kersting has a degree in education from the University of Missouri.
