Capital campaigns

Capital campaigns are both the best way for your organization to raise funds and the most misunderstood. Done successfully, they not only provide significant funds to improve facilities and enlarge endowments, they can also help your organization take stock in itself and prepare for the future. However, they involve a lot of work for board members, directors and staff. This workshop will help you determine how to get started and establish goals for each phase of the campaign, as well as define campaign timelines.

Topics we will cover include:
  •  What you need to know about a capital campaign before you start
  •  Understanding the typical flow of a campaign from feasibility study to public celebration
  •  Building a strong campaign team that includes both volunteers and professionals
  •  Understanding how prospect research and donor cultivation forms part of the campaign
  •  The art of skillful campaign communications before, during and after the campaign

After this session, you will know what lies behind a successful capital campaign, and whether your organization is ready to embark on it. The session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

 

Speakers for this session:

Inez Bergquist
Senior Consultant
Skystone Ryan

Inez Bergquist is a 30-year veteran of nonprofit management. She was with the University of Minnesota Foundation from 1979-81 and Minnesota Orchestra from 1981-86 as a staff researcher. Inez founded the American Prospect Research Association in 1981, and was its first president. Inez is also a member of the Association of Advancement Professionals and the National Planned Giving Council. Inez is currently co-chair of the capital campaign for St. Mark`s Cathedral in Minneapolis, and has consulted with capital campaigns for the Minnesota Orchestra, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota Zoo, Science Museum of Minnesota, Menninger Institute, Illinois Wesleyan University, and many other local and national organizations. Inez started the online donor database the Donor Series.com (now Donorsearch.net) and has served on many nonprofit boards in the Twin Cities. A native of Chicago, Inez received her B.A. from Augsburg College in 1977 and M.S. from University of Minnesota in 1984.

Lisa Barnwell Williams
Managing Partner
Skystone Ryan Inc.

As the Managing Partner of Cincinnati-based consulting firm Skystone Ryan Inc., Lisa Barnwell Williams has nearly twenty-five years of executive-level experience in fundraising and organizational development for nonprofit organizations. During her consulting career, she has served nonprofits locally, regionally and nationally, providing counsel in areas as diverse as capital campaign planning and execution, creating a development program, strategic planning, and solicitor training. She previously held senior development positions at Northern Kentucky Family Health Centers, Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Agnes Irwin School and Whittier College. An immediate past board member of the Cincinnati chapter of AFP, she is a frequent speaker and trainer on topics relating to capital campaigns, major gifts solicitations, and the role of the nonprofit board. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Williams College, and Master’s degrees from New York University and Columbia University.
