Finding Funders: the art of successful research

According to a recent survey of grantmakers, between 40% and 75% of the proposals that they receive do not fit their guidelines. It is now recognized that the more thoroughly you conduct your research, ask smart questions, and cultivate foundation contacts, the more your organization will stand out from the crowd.

This session will cover the following topics:
  • Prospecting for new money: how to find suitable grantmakers in expected and unexpected places
  • Computer resources and technology: where to find the best information on grantmakers on the web
  • Making sense of foundation guidelines: and how to read between the lines
  • Is there a fit: how to decide whether a foundation's priorities are compatible with your mission
This session is ideal for beginning grant seekers who are getting their feet wet, and need step by step guidance on how to find appropriate  funding.
Speakers for this session:

Kaky Grant
Director of Campaign Resources
Capital Development Services

Kaky has served as the Director of Campaign Resources at Capital Development Services for 3 years. Before Capital Development Services, Kaky worked in Washington, DC at the Smithsonian National Zoo raising major gifts for a $35 million capital along with managing the highest membership circle at the Zoo. Kaky also worked at The Field School in DC helping to guide the school`s Annual Fund, the Alumni Relations Program, and Capital Campaign of $10 million. Kaky assists client campaigns with their research and writing needs as well as personnel search services. Additionally, she ensures that each client has access to the many available company tools and services to help them achieve their campaign goals. She sits on the Board of Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement - Carolinas. Kaky is a Chattanooga, TN native and a graduate of Davidson College. She lives with her husband Carter in Greensboro, NC.

Sally Wade
Grant Writer
Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina

Sally Wade is Grant Writer for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, one of the ten largest food banks in the nation, serving 34 counties. Her experience ranges from local and state government to nonprofit organizations in public education, public broadcasting, HIV/AIDS and faith-based human service agencies. She has researched, written, obtained, reported on and stewarded grants ranging from $500 to $500,000 from town, city, county, state, and federal governments, United Way, civic groups, faith communities, corporations, corporate and private foundations. She is currently responsible for over $1 million in annual revenue.
