Planned giving

Over the next decade, trillions of dollars will be donated to nonprofit organizations through planned gifts. These are most often unrestricted bequests of many thousands of dollars and they can make or break fundraising campaigns. You need to make sure you understand the motivations and challenges for donors and their advisors, know how to set realistic goals, and plan how you will attract and close these gifts.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Planned giving vehicles and how they work
  • Special stewardship plans for top-level donors
  • Customizing a planned giving program for your organization
  •  Keeping your donors involved and committed after the gift has been made

After the program, you'll have a better understanding of (i) planned giving principles and practices, and (ii) how to implement a successful planned giving program.  This session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

 

Speakers for this session:

Jane Grosse
VP, Institutional Advancement
Elon Homes for Children

Jane Grosse is Vice President of Institutional Advancement of Elon Homes for Children in North Carolina. She also serves as the agency Policy Governance Officer. Jane is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and a graduate of the Policy Governance Academy in Atlanta and the National Planned Giving Institute of William and Mary College in Williamsburg, VA. She also graduated from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC. Jane has served as a member of the Board of Directors for many non-profit organizations including the Charlotte Chapter of AFP, the Junior League of Charlotte and the Charlotte Museum of History. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Junior League of Charlotte in 2002. Jane has consulted with numerous non-profit organizations about fund development and Policy Governance.

Mark Land
Managing Director, Center for Planned Giving
Wachovia Nonprofit and Philanthropic Services

Mark Land joined Wachovia in 2000 where he currently serves as Vice President and Managing Director of the Wachovia Center for Planned Giving. Prior to his current role, he served as a Philanthropic Advisor providing consultative services for non-profit institutions and philanthropic individuals. Mark has more than 20 years of experience working with not-for-profit institutions. Prior to joining Wachovia, he served as Senior Consultant with the fundraising firm Whitney Jones, Inc., working with not-for-profits throughout North Carolina. He was Director of Alumni Relations at North Carolina School of the Arts. In addition, he served as Director of Individual Giving and Director of Development for the School of Filmmaking during the School’s successful $25 million “Creating Our Future” capital campaign. He attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and the University of South Carolina. He is a graduate of the American Bankers Association National Trust School.

Stephen Watt
Executive Director of Gift Planning
North Carolina State University

Steve has worked in University Advancement, mainly in higher education, for over 30 years representing instutitions in Ohio, South Carolina and North Carolina. Although he has worked in all areas of fundraising, his specialization in the field of gift planning began in 1987. Serving as Executive Director of Gift Planning at North Carolina State University, Steve`s responsibilities include all aspects of planned giving for the university and its related entities as well as processing all stock gifts to the university and working with all gifts of real estate. NCSU is completing a $1 billion campaign. Steve is active in the North Carolina Planned Giving Council, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association, and the Wake County Estate Planning Council. He has a B.A. from Muskingum College, and M.Ed. from the University of South Carolina.
